Every building footprint the City of Richmond publishes, within the city limits only (no Henrico or Chesterfield), colored by the year it was built. Data built 2026-10-14.

How each year is chosen

1. Register. When a building listed on the National Register has an earlier date than the assessor's year, the register date wins. These dates come from Wikidata items that carry an NRHP reference number and sit inside the footprint, or from a short hand-checked list (23 buildings in all).
2. Assessor. The City Assessor's year built for the parcel. Each footprint is matched to the parcel that contains its center; if none does, it goes to the parcel it overlaps most. When a parcel holds several structures, the largest one gets the parcel's year, and garages and other outbuildings share it.
3. Estimated (shown paler, with “c.”). Some years in the assessor data are placeholders or rounded guesses (1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1875, 1880, 1885, 1890, 1895, 1900, 1910, 1915, 1920, 1925, 1930, 1940, 1950): each of these shows up at more than twice the rate of nearby years. Those years, and buildings with no year at all, are replaced with the median year of dated buildings within 100 m.

Coverage: 75% assessor, 24.3% estimated, 23 register overrides, 0.7% unknown. 195 buildings link to Wikidata. Building heights are not shown because no free source publishes them for Richmond.
